Medical guidelines recommend that individuals complete a screening colonoscopy at the age of 45. Typically, a separate consultation with a GI specialist is required prior to scheduling, costing additional time and money, however, there is an alternative. Abington surgical center offers a direct access colonoscopy program. What this means is that if you are a healthy individual, taking few to no medications with no prior GI history, you can potentially forego the step of seeing a GI physician for a consult.
Indications to schedule a Direct Access Colonoscopy may include:
Screening colonoscopy for patients over 45
Screening for family history of colon cancer
Suspected stomach ulcer
Follow up of polyps in the bowel
Indigestion/heartburn
Acid reflux
Iron deficient anemia
Safety is top priority, so the following steps need to be completed to successfully schedule your direct access colonoscopy.

Referring doctor – name and phone number
Pharmacy name and phone number
You will be required to fill out an on-line medical history which you can complete at home or the nurse can complete this with you over the phone. The nurse navigator will provide the information to complete the online medical history.
The nurse reviews the information provided. Then, she will forward your information to the anesthesia department and then along to the GI physician.
The GI physician’s office will contact you to review any other necessary information and to discuss the prep instruction. The GI’s office will coordinate the scheduling of the test at Abington Surgical Center.

Abington Surgical Center accepts most insurances in addition to offering a cash pay rate. Your bill can be paid by cash or credit card. Every insurance is different, but know that as an independent outpatient facility. Abington Surgical Center is the most cost-efficient option for your colonoscopy.
